Ex-AKB48 Idol Atsuko Maeda Learns to Drive in Doraemon Ad

Jean Reno, Satoshi Tsumabuki return in latest live-action Toyota ad

French film star Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional, Mission: Impossible, The Da Vinci Code) is back as the manga cat Doraemon in his 10th live-action Toyota commercial on Thursday. Like the nine previous ads from Toyota Motor Corporation, the 10th ad depicts the characters of the classic children's manga Doraemon, two decades after they grow up. Satoshi Tsumabuki (Dororo, Ikebukuro West Gate Park, Smuggler) plays Doraemon's hapless owner Nobita.

Atsuko Maeda, the singer who recently "graduated" from the idol group AKB48, returns as Jaiko Gōda, the younger sister of the bully Gian.

The theme of the 10th ad is "Nobita's Academic Examinations." In the commercial, Nobita is studying to pass his driver's license test, and becomes frustrated. He uses Doraemon's "Ankipan," a bread that by eating it allows him to memorize whatever he prints on the bread. At the test site, Nobita gets sick from eating too much Ankipan, and subsequently fails the test. Jaiko then pulls up in her new pink Toyota Crown, named "Momotarō," having already passed the test.
