SPYAIR to Perform 'Final' Gintama Film's Theme Song

posted on by Sarah Nelkin
Rock band already performed 2 songs for TV anime

It was announced on Thursday that the Japanese rock band SPYAIR will perform the main theme song for this summer's Gekijōban Gintama Kanketsu-hen: Yorozuya yo Eien Nare (Final Gintama: The Movie : Be Forever Yorozuya) movie. This will be the third time the band has contributed to the franchise, with their first contribution being "Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!)" for the revived Gintama' series' first ending theme in 2011. They also performed the series' second opening theme titled “Sakura Mitsutsuki.”

Band leader MOMIKEN made a comment on the new song:

I've had the chance to do the theme songs for Gintama' twice now, and this will make the third. And it's a movie at that! And it's the “final” one! When I'm being given such an amazing stage, I really have no choice but to do it! We're also giving a lot of effort into making the new song. Everyone, look forward to listening to it!

The Gintama' anime adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi's comedy manga has spawned three television series with a total of over 200 episodes. The franchise also received an animated movie adaptation in 2010, which retold the Benizakura arc that was previously depicted in the anime and manga. The movie grossed over 1 billion yen (about US$13 million) in Japanese theaters, and was released on DVD and Blu-ray in North America by Sentai Filmworks.

The main cast for the original anime will be returning once again for the movie, with Tomokazu Sugita (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Hiiro no Kakera) as Gintoki Sakata, Daisuke Sakaguchi (Hyou-ka, Tokyo Mew Mew) as Shinpachi Shimura, and Rie Kugimya (The IDOLM@STER, The Familiar of Zero) as Kagura. Yōichi Fujita and Shinji Takamatsu will be serving as director and supervisor, as they did on the television series.

The movie will open in Japanese theaters on July 7.
