Manga Creators Celebrate One Piece's 20th Anniversary on Shonen Jump Cover

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The second and third combined 2017 issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, which shipped on Monday, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga with a special cover. Manga creators drew their own characters as the main characters of Oda's iconic series. Artists including Haruichi Furudate (Haikyu!!), Yūki Tabata (Black Clover), Takamasa Moue (Ole Golazo), and Koyoharu Gotōge (Kimetsu no Yaiba) contributed illustrations for the cover.

The large text around the characters reads, "We are friends, too!!!!!!!!!!" The lower right corner of the cover hints that the other half of Luffy will appear on the magazine's next cover and connect to the current.

The first 2017 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump, which shipped on December 5, also celebrated One Piece with a commemorative cover. The large white texts reads, "2017 is our year!"

Every issue of Shonen Jump this year will celebrate One Piece with famous image from the manga on the spine. The first 2017 issue's spine pictured Luffy about to cut his face as a child, and the current issue shows Shanks giving Luffy his hat.

Shueisha will host its Jump Festa 2017 event at Chiba's Makuhari Messe convention center on December 17 and 18. The publisher is promoting its own booth with images of Luffy.
