Latest Restaurant Manga Brings Extinct Animals to Life

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Anime series focusing on cooking have become increasingly popular, so much so that an entirely new sub-genre blending the audience's desire for tasty dishes with the popularity of isekai (transported to another world) series has emerged. The most recent example is Restaurant to Another World while Sunrise has signed on to animate next year's Otherwordly Izakaya "Nobu" light novels. The first focused on Western-style food served up to fantasy world guests and the latter is similar, but the food is traditional Japanese cuisine. The appeal of finding a hole-in-the-wall eatery only to discover all of its patrons are magic is easy to understand.

But what if they weren't elves and dragons but instead dinosaurs and Dodo birds? That's the premise of Kuromaru's Zetsumetsu Sakaba (The Tavern of Extinct Animals) comedy manga where the guests range from Gastornis to the Saber-toothed tiger.

Each of the patrons have their own, anachronistic complaints. The Gastronis (an extinct, flightless bird) works struggles with his job at an ad agency. Hallucigenia, Opabinia, and Pomatrum giggle like school girls.

Also included in the manga is a paleontology column by science writer Ken Tsuchiya.

The first volume went on sale on November 30. The Book First location in Shinjuku had a large display to promote the first volume's release.

The manga currently runs in Shonengahosha's Young King Ours magazine. Kuromaru is also the artist of Kurosagi - The Black Swindler manga, which was adapted into a live-action television show in 2006.
