My Hero Academia, Pokemon, Transformers, Power Rangers Offered on Free Comic Book Day 2018

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

You've got about 130 days until Free Comic Book Day 2018 but next year's line-up is already planned with some manga series to keep an eye out for on May 5, 2018. The committee announced its Gold and Silver Sponsor Comic Books on Thursday.

Viz Media will offer Tenya Yabuno, Hidenori Kusaka, and Satoshi Yamamoto's Pokémon: Sun and Moon and Pokémon Horizon manga and a sampler for My Hero Academia by Kōhei Horikoshi and RWBY by Shirow Miwa. Both manga are based on the best-selling Nintendo 3DS games. Free Comic Book Day describes the story for Pokémon Horizon:

Pokémon Horizon: Akira's summer vacation in the Alola region heats up when he befriends a Rockruff with a mysterious gemstone. Together, Akira hopes they can achieve his dream of becoming a Pokémon Trainer and learning the amazing Z-move. But first, Akira needs to pass a test to earn a Trainer Passport. This becomes even more difficult when Rockruff gets kidnapped! Pokémon Sun & Moon: Sun dreams of money. Moon dreams of scientific discoveries. When their paths cross with Team Skull, both their plans go awry!

IDW Publishing is offering issue #0 of Transformers: Unicron: The Darkest Hour by John Barber, Alex Milne, and Sara Pitre-Durocher. Based on Hasbro's toy franchise, the issue serves as a lead in to the "biggest story in the history of Transformers" as the Autobots try to save Rom's homeworld from the "world killer" as Unicron makes his way toward Cybertron itself.

Boom! Studios will also have a special honing in on the Power Rangers nostalgia. The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Special issue by Kyle Higgins, Ryan Parrot, Diego Calindo, and Jamal Campbell is a completely new story put together exclusively for Free Comic Book Day. The issue will tie-in to the ongoing Power Rangers: Shattered Grid storyline as Zordon asks the Power Rangers to help fight Lord Drakkon, an alternate reality version of the Green Ranger and evil to boot.

Dark Horse Comics will give readers a chance to check out the comic tie-in to the Nintendo Switch's Arms video game and pick up a new story from the world of The Legend of Korra. The Free Comic Book Day team describes both stories:

The Avatar pairs up with a rambunctious sidekick in The Legend of Korra! When Meelo shirks his duties at the refugee camp, Korra recruits him for a top-secret, super-important mission: tracking down a pack of lost pets! Then, in a story based on Nintendo's smash-hit video game, a debut fighter in the ARMS League tirelessly trains to reach the top! Spring Man's only wish is to win the Grand Prix—but first, he has to win the title of the Spring Gym! Can he defeat the other 599 contenders to become the best?

Kodansha Comics will offer a preview of the much anticipated Ghost in the Shell comic anthology. Ghost in the Shell: Global Neural Network brings together an international team of sci-fi comic fans to create new stories from the world of Masamune Shirow's hit original. The story included in this preview will place Major Kusanagi in Shanghai after the kidnapping of Aramaki. There, she encounters an old friend and wartime enemy.

Udon Entertainment will offer Ultra Street Fighter II issue #1 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Street Fighter video game. The publisher is re-issuing its very first comic story as a six-issue mini-series for the anniversary. The 32-page first issue is written by Ken Sui-Chong with art by Jeffrey Chamba Cruz.

Publishers Tokyopop, Yen Press, and Action Lab Entertainment are also participating this year. Tokyopop will offer "Chapter 0" of its The Nightmare Before Christmas comic written by DJ Milky with art by Kei Ishiyama. Yen Press will have Crush by Svetlana Chmakova, and Action Lab Entertainment will offer Miraculous Adventures of Ladybug and Cat Noir.

Free Comic Book Day will take place throughout North America on May 5, 2018.
