Van Houten Cocoa Collaborates with Glass Mask Manga for 190th Anniversary

posted on by Kim Morrissy

Suzue Miuchi's Glass Mask manga is collaborating with Van Houten Cocoa to celebrate the 190th anniversary of the Dutch chocolate drink maker. Van Houten Cocoa will give away exclusive Glass Mask goods to a limited number of customers. A special website has been launched which details the specifics of the collaboration campaign.

Customers who spend at least 200 yen on Van Houten Cocoa products can send in the details on their receipt to apply for "Course A," a free QUO gift card worth 1,000 yen. Alternatively, they can spend 500 yen to apply for "Course B," a free mug with an accompanying spoon. Up to 1,600 people can win the gift card, while 300 people can win the mug. Winners will receive their prizes each month. (The giveaway is available only to customers in Japan.)

To promote the campaign, Van Houten Cocoa has uploaded three videos related to the collaboration on their YouTube channel, which amusingly depict the Glass Mask characters reacting to the collaboration with dramatic histrionics. Coenraad Johannes Van Houten, the original creator of Van Houten Cocoa, is drawn in Glass Mask's distinctive shojo manga art style.

The collaboration will run from November 1 to February 28, 2019. The two properties previously collaborated in 2017 with a similar style of giveaway.

Miuchi launched The Glass Mask manga in 1975, and it inspired a 1984 television anime series and a 2005-2006 anime remake, as well two live-action television series. There was also a three-part video series that started in 1998. Miuchi acknowledged in 2009 that she would end the manga "soon," and stated in 2014 that the manga is moving closer to the ending. The 50th compiled volume of the manga was delayed indefinitely in 2013, and the 49th volume was released in 2012.
