THE ALFEE Frontman Wields Monstrous Guitar at Godzilla Store Event

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Godzilla is a busy guy. The biggest kaiju on the block has to fend off formidable Gundam mechas trying to steal his spotlight while also serving as ambassador for gamma-ray constellations, figuring out all this new virtual reality technology, and selling children's books. That's a lot to ask of lizard coping with the effects of radiation poisoning.

The King of Monsters fits it all in somewhere and still made time to rock out at the first anniversary celebration of the Godzilla Store Tokyo in Shinjuku last week. THE ALFEE frontman Toshihiko Takamizawa appeared at the event wielding a one-of-a-kind Shin Godzilla guitar. Takamizawa is known for his collection of approximately 420 custom ESP guitars, some looking more like weaponry than instruments. Takamizawa hopes to play the guitar at Budokan this year.

Takamizawa is a huge Godzilla fan and admitted at the even that he was obsessed with King Kong vs. Godzilla film when it premiered in 1962. He still watches the movies now, regardless if it's Hollywood's version or a film from Japan. When asked what monster he wants to see Godzilla face in the upcoming film, Takamizawa suggested Jet Jaguar. Godzilla and Takamizawa share the same birth year and the musician added that 2019 is both Godzilla and his "65th anniversary."

The event hosted an anniversary illustration drawn by conceptual artist Kouji Tajima.

The animated Godzilla film trilogy is wrapping up with Godzilla: The Planet Eater (Godzilla: Hoshi wo Kū Mono) opening in theaters in Japan on November 9. The live-action film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the sequel to Legendary Pictures' 2014 Godzilla movie is slated to open on May 31, 2019. The Godzilla vs. Kong film will open the following year on May 22, 2020.
