Shouta Aoi's Pop Team Epic Version Inspires Plush Doll

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Voice actor Shōta Aoi saved the world of Pop Team Epic as a time-travelling idol willing to do all he can to help Popuko and Pipimi.

His last episode appearance took the internet by storm and even Pop Team Epic creator Bkub Okawa drew a bit of fan art of him.

Okawa's design is finding new life as a stuffed plush by TAKARA TOMY A.R.T.S' Chokkōri-san merchandise line. Fans can buy Popuko, Pipimi, and Shōta Aoi as a complete set for 4,200 yen (US$38).

The dolls come with a set of hands (censored on the website) if you want to add some sass to your photos. The hands are never shown on the Shōta Aoi doll on the product page but there's nothing stopping you from getting creative.

The Chokkōri-san product line is meant to appeal to social media gurus and are considered highly-photographable for Instagram. There are 240 types of dolls available for purchase and over 1.1 million have been sold.

The Pop Team Epic television anime series premiered in January 2018. HIDIVE, Funimation, Crunchyroll, AsianCrush, and Amazon Prime Video all streamed the anime as it aired in Japan. Adult Swim's Toonami block aired the series starting on June 30.

The anime adapts a surreal four-panel manga by Bkub Okawa that centers around two 14-year-old girls, the short Popuko and the tall Pipimi.

Sentai Filmworks announced on Wednesday that it has licensed "two special episodes" for the Pop Team Epic anime series. The new special will air on April 1. Sentai Filmworks confirmed with ANN that the two-episode special will be the special that will air on April 1 in Japan, and will include two episodes of 30-minutes each. April 1, 2019 will mark the second anniversary of the original announcement for the anime adaptation.
