Honey and Clover, March comes in like a lion Creator Draws Anne of Green Gables

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The July issue of Hakusensha's MOE magazine features cover artwork by Honey and Clover and March comes in like a lion creator Chica Umino. Umino drew character Anne Shirley from Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic series Anne of Green Gables (known in Japan as Akage no Anne) for the cover.

The cover art corresponds to the issue's editorial "Must Read! Overseas Children's Literature for Adults." The editorial includes an interview with Umino whose artwork of Anne was also used for the Anne of Green Gables book. Publisher Shueisha's Mirai Bunko imprint released the classic novel with an updated translation in 2011.

Anne of Green Gables remains popular in Japan. Hokkaido hosts an "Anne of Canadian World" tourist attraction that includes an exact replica of the Green Gables home on Prince Edward Island. The original novel has inspired anime series, manga, and live-action films. BBC News looked in-depth at Japan's fascination with the story and how it lends itself to the kawaii aesthetic. The BBC states approximately 3,500 Japanese tourists make the pilgrimage to Canada's sparsely populated island every year
