Olympian nicknamed after Anime character

According to the official Olympics website Sydney 2000 Judo Gold medalist Ryoko Tamura is nicknamed Yawara-Chan, after the main character of Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl .

Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl told the story of Yawara Inokuma, a talented judo student being taught by her grandfather. The anime series ran from 1989 to 1992, for a total of 124 episode, the manga series it was based on ran from 1987 to 1993, for a 29 full-volume run.

Despite dominating her weight class (under 48kg) in international Judo competitions for the past 8 years, winning 4 world championships, this is the first Olympic Gold Medal for Tamara who won Silver at Barcelon in 1992 and again at Atlanta in 1996.
