Manga Titles Dominate Graphic Novel Sales

posted on by Garry Berryhill
Manga is selling in greater numbers than its non-manga graphic novel competition.

Rankings "by a major industry reporting service" showed manga titles in eighteen of the top twenty sales spots in major booksellers. The top ten consists only of Tokyopop titles. Nine of the top twenty sellers were volumes of Chobits and Love Hina.

Of the top 50 graphic novels, 40 were manga.

These rankings were based on "piece sales", or units sold. The cost of the graphic novels was therefore not a factor, helping to explain the ubiquity of Tokyopop titles in the top spots.

This dominance by manga in bookstores does not extend into the world of the comic shop, where more traditional comic powerhouses remain on top.

ICv2 speculates that this shows manga to be a largely untapped sales area in the more superhero-centric comic stores.
