Anime and Manga in Time Asia

posted on by Christopher Macdonald
August 11 issue devoted entirely to Japanese pop-culture

Continuing Time's pattern of providing largely favorable coverage of anime, and manga, an August 11 special issue of Time Asia is devoted entirely to Japanese popular culture. The articles in the issue focus on a number of topics, from the success of the conbini convenience store, to new J-Pop and J-Rock singers, to a profile of anime director Koji Yamamura (Mount Head).

The overall framework of this special report is a discussion of the concept of "gross national cool", first postulated by Douglas McGray in the journal Foreign Policy. McGray argues that because it is no longer able to influence its neighbors by military, political, or economic means, Japan is consciously turning to popular culture to project power and position itself as the "world's next cultural superpower."

The special issue is available at Time.com.

Douglas McGray's article is available at Foreignpolicy.com.
