Manga by Tezuka, Tatsumi Vie for Harvey, Quill Awards

The Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards announced that Yoshihiro Tatsumi's Abandon the Old in Tokyo collection of urban stories (Drawn and Quarterly) and the late Osamu Tezuka's medical thriller Ode to Kirihito (Vertical) have been nominated for Best American Edition of Foreign Material for 2007. In the same category are the Nordic Moomin comics (Drawn and Quarterly) by the late Tove Jansson.
Jansson's whimsical animal tales inspired four anime series and one movie in Japan. The other nominees are Lat's semi-autobiographical Kapung Boy retrospective on 1950s Malaysia, and the first volume of Joann Sfar's portrayal of European Jewish communities in Klezmer. Creators in the comic field nominate and vote on these awards, which will be presented at Baltimore Comic-Con in Maryland on September 8.
The Reed Business Information and the NBC Universal Television Stations also nominated Ode to Kirihito in the Graphic Novel category of the 2007 Quill Awards. A panel Publisher Weekly editors nominated books for the awards, and 6,000 booksellers and librarians vote on them for an MSNBC broadcast on October 27 in New York City. Kirihito is competing against Scott McCloud's metacommentary on Making Comics, Bryan Talbot's Alice in Sunderland exploration of the real-life wonderland inspiration, and two Drawn and Quarterly titles, Rutu Modan's Exit Wounds and Marguerite Abouet's Aya.
