13-year-old to co-star in first Japanese film to open in 4 countries on same day

13-year-old Mayuko Fukuda beat over 300 other candidates for the heroine role in the L spinoff movie of the live-action Death Note suspense franchise. Fukuda will play Maki (image), a mysterious "genius girl," opposite the detective L's actor Ken'ichi Matsuyama in the tentatively titled movie. The Death Note movies themselves are based on Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ooba's manga of the same name. Fukuda played Hana in the live-action Grave of the Fireflies and Takako in the animated Piano no Mori.

In related news, the L movie will be the first Japanese film to open in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan on the same day. It opens February 9, 2008. The producers say on the official website that it is possible that still more countries will open the movie on that day. The Death Note: The Last Name movie was the first Japanese movie to open in Japan and Hong Kong on the same day. Matsuyama and Erika Toda (Misa) went to Hong Kong's 20,000-person premiere showing for Last Name.
