TV Drama Based on Anmitsu-hime Shōjo Manga Gets Sequel

Live-action Hana Yori Dango's Mao Inoue to reprise fantasy princess role

Last January's television remake of Shōsuke Kurakane's Anmitsu-hime shōjo comedy manga will return in a new sequel special next January. Mao Inoue, the 21-year-old actress best known for starring in the Japanese live-action television version of the Hana Yori Dango manga, will reprise her role of Anmitsu-hime, a headstrong princess who gets into mischief in a fanciful feudal land. Asahi Uchida (Angel, Atagoal wa Neko no Mori, School Wars: Hero) will play Yagyū-maru, a palace guard who rescues the princess out of a tight situation. Veteran movie star Riki Takeuchi (Takashi Miike's Dead or Alive, Yo-Yo Girl Cop, Battle Royale II: Requiem) will return to television for the first time in a decade to play a villain. The princess will fight Takeuchi's villain character in a climactic sword battle.

The original manga classic had run in Kobunsha's Shōjo manga magazine from 1945 to 1950. It had previously spawned a 1954-60 live-action film series, a 1983-84 live-action drama television series starring Kyoko Koizumi, a 1986-87 manga remake by Izumi Takemoto in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine, and a 1986-87 anime television series by Studio Pierrot.
