38th Japan Cartoonist Awards Announced

The Japan Cartoonists Association of manga creators announced the winners of the 38th Japan Cartoonist Awards on May 8. The Kamakura Monogatari manga from San-chōme no Yūhi - Yūyake no Uta (Sunset on Third Street) creator Ryohei Saigan and Seiji Manga from Yukiyoshi Tokoro won this year's Grand Prizes. Kamakura Monogatari is a mystery work set in Kamakura, a city known for its cultural and historical landmarks. It runs in Futabasha's Manga Town magazine. Seiji Manga is an editorial cartoon that satires political figures in the Mainichi Shimbun paper.

The judging committee, which included Anpanman creator Takashi Yanase and Mazinger Z creator Gō Nagai, also gave an Award of Excellence to Daisuke Igarashi's Children of the Sea manga. Viz Media will launch this manga in North America next month. Satoshi Ueda won an Award of Special Recognition for Natsukashi no Shōwa 30-Nendai Shikishi-gaten, a collection of 50-year-old storytelling drawings. Kenichi Kitami won the Literary Giant Award for his entire life's works. The actual awards ceremony will take place on June 12 at the Grand Prince Hotel Akasaka in Tokyo.
