Utsurun Desu. 4-Panel Gag Manga Gets Anime Green-Lit (Updated)

Promo streamed for 3 DVDs based on Sensha Yoshida's nonsensical comedy

An anime adaptation of Sensha Yoshida's Utsurun Desu. four-panel "nonsensical" gag comedy manga has been announced on Thursday. The manga used a stable of off-the-wall characters to tell jokes that defied logic or reasoning. A 54-second promotional video has been posted on the YouTube video-streaming website.

Comedian Takanori Takeyama of the comedy duo Cunning recorded dialogue on Thursday as the popular character Kabuto-Mushi Saitō-san — thus named because his hair is shaped like the horns of a rhinoceros beetle (kabuto mushi). Takeyama half-jokingly noted that all of his lines were just onomatopoeic sounds that he yelled out. The other cast members include Chafūrin (Kawauso), Mamiko Noto (Kappa), Tomokazu Seki (Yamasaki-sensei), Mai Nakahara (Micchii), and Norio Wakamoto (Tami Inuyama). Filmmaker Mankyū is directing the project.

The original manga ran in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine from 1989 to 1994. The first of the anime's three monthly volumes will ship on DVD in Japan on August 21. The anime will also be streamed to mobile phones in Japan.
