Apple Confirms Stricter Content Ban on iPhone Apps

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins

The technology company Apple has confirmed reports from software developers that it started banning many applications with sexually suggestive themes from its App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch mobile devices. Apple cited the complaints it received from users for the stricter content restrictions.

Philip W. Schiller, head of worldwide product marketing at Apple, commented on the ban, saying, "It came to the point where we were getting customer complaints from women who found the content getting too degrading and objectionable, as well as parents who were upset with what their kids were able to see." Many app developers have decried the banning, stating that Apple had not yet banned a Playboy app nor had it banned a Sports Illustrated app tied to its annual swimsuit issue.

Earlier this month, About.com posted reactions from publishers in the graphic novel industry regarding the announcement of Apple's new iPad device, which will support apps designed for the iPhone. In regards to the announcement, Yaoi Press' Yamila Abraham had expressed caution to the iPad, due to the rejection of "Zesty, our tamest graphic novel, without citing a reason," by Apple's App Store.
