Ghibli's Goro Miyazaki: Next Work May Come Around 2013

Goro Miyazaki, the director of this past summer's From Up On Poppy Hill (Kokuriko-Zaka Kara) anime film from Studio Ghibli, revealed on Saturday that the next work may come around 2013. He spoke on Friday to an audience of 180 at central Japan's Matsumoto City Museum of Art, which is holding an exhibit of Studio Ghibli layout art.
Regarding the next work, Miyazaki said, "I think it'll be about two years from now. Actually, my dad [studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki] has begun making it now. It's amazing."
The younger Miyazaki happened to have graduated from the Agriculture Department of Matsumoto City's Shinshū University. He explained his choice of college by noting that he was in the mountain-climbing club in high school and that the university was close to the mountains. He added to the laughter of the audience that one more factor clinched the deal: the university's second entrance exam did not have a math section.
From Up On Poppy Hill opened in Japan on July 16 and eventually became the highest-earning domestic film in Japan this year, although it made less money than most of the recent Ghibli films. The film is Goro Miyazaki's second directorial feature, after Tales from Earthsea. Kokuriko-Zaka Kara adapted a coming-of-age shōjo manga of the same name by Chizuru Takahashi and Tetsurō Sayama.
Fellow Ghibli director and co-founder Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday) confirmed in September that he also has a new work that may be about two more years from being close to completion.
