Convention Collation - 30th May

posted on by Jon Hayward
There's plenty of things happening with conventions but they might not be quite newsworthy enough to be covered in their own article. So when we can we'll run around and collate together all the news we can about the various conventions what they're planning. This week? AVCon, Manifest and Wai-Con.

SMASH - Sydney Convention Center - July 14th 2012 - http://www.smash.org.au

This week the Sydney Manga and Anime Show not only announced that special guests Sakura Tange, Yūko Miyamura will be joining already announced guest Shinichirō Miki but declared their AMV and fanfiction competitions open. Their cosplay competition will open this Friday, the 1st of June with forty slots available for competitors.

You can also see a copy of their promotional poster through theirfacebook page.

AVCon - Adelaide Convention Center - July 27th-29th 2012 - http://www.avcon.org.au

This week AVCon has announced this year's Lolita Parade and Designer Showcase, while there is no outright statement it can be surmised that the competition will be run on the Saturday (from rules and that AVCon's cosplay is always on Sunday). The aim of the showcase is to highlight the Lolita fashion subculture through three components, a General Parade looking at general co-ordination of the outfit and for those who just want to show off their ensemble without judging. The hand made parade for technical-merit, style and co-ordination and the designer showcase where a designer can display up to three designs on the catwork more akin to a fashion show.

You can now enter the Creative components of AVCon including Art, Fanfiction and Haiku, all information on these components can be found on AVCon's creative section.

Additionally, AVCon has officially sold out of Gold Passes, but regular tickets for the weekend are still available.

Manifest - Melbourne Showgrounds - August 17-19th 2012 - http://www.manifest.org

The Melbourne Anime Fair has just opened up the signups for it's Cosplay and FRUiTS Fashion competitions for the 2012 show. Signups for it's Saturday and Sunday competitions can now be submitted using the supplied forms and other cosplay events will have further information before the date.

Manifest is also seeking an artist for their 2013 event, the artist will be required to meet strict specifications and deadlines for the entire year for a variety of products required in the yearly running of Manifest. All artists who are interested should supply samples of their work and of Manifest's mascot Peppa-chan by June 20th, no specific renumeration has been mentioned apart from a rather forboding mention of beginning "contractual negotiations".

Finally anyone who might be interested in either sponsoring or trading at Manifest 2012 can now download their traders pack.

Wai-Con - Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre - http://www.wai-con.org - February 2-3 2013

Two points, the first is Wai-Con has announced through their facebook page that they will be running the 2013 convention on the 2nd and 3rd of Feb 2013. They are also currently planning a kareoke night for the 9th of June at the UWA tavern so that just like Japan, you'll be able to drown your sorrows in cheap beer while listening to bad karaoke.

If you happen to have any news involving your convention or event, please email [email protected] with the details.
