Independent Anime Koji Yamamura Masterclass and Retrospective in London November 1

The Oscar-nominated Japanese animator Koji Yamamura ("Mt. Head," "Franz Kafka's A Country Doctor") will be in London on Thursday November 1 to present a Masterclass (limited to 25 places) and a Retrospective, both part of the 2012 London International Animation Festival at London's Barbican Centre. The Masterclass starts at 6.30 p.m. (running to 9 p.m.) and the Retrospective starts at 8.45 p.m.

Animation filmmaker Koji Yamamura is arguably the greatest short-form, auteur animator in Japan today. He is certainly the most internationally successful. Yamamuras's animated worlds are in constant flux, characterised by dazzling visual images that shift and change in the blink of an eye.

Over the past decade, his work has been critically acclaimed around the world. His 2002 animated short ‘Mount Head’ was nominated for an Oscar and won top prizes at major animation festivals around the world including Annecy in 2003 and Zagreb and Hiroshima in 2004. His films have been awarded more than 60 international prizes and retrospective screenings have been held all over the world. Join the inventive creator of more than 20 short films in this fascinating exploration of his artistic process that will both surprise and inspire.

Please note: You do not have to be a practising animator or filmmaker to attend this masterclass. This is not a practical workshop. Numbers are strictly limited.

Earlier in the festival, there is a programme of independent Japanese short films on Saturday October 27 at 7 p.m. The same evening also sees a screening (9 p.m.) of the work of animator Keita Kurosaka, including his short film Midori-ko.
