Live-Action Manga Free Screenings at University of East Anglia

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Wednesday May 22, double-bill of Kamui: The Lone Ninja and Takashi Miike's For Love's Sake.

The University of East Anglia in Norwich will screen a free double-bill of live-action manga adaptations on Wednesday May 22, starting at 6 p.m. The event will be in Lecture Theatre 3, and is open to Over-15s. (Directions to the university can be found on the university's website.)

The first screening is Kamui: the Lone Ninja, Yōichi Sai's (Choi Yang-il's) 2009 live-action film adaptation of Sanpei Shirato's Kamui Gaiden ninja manga. Ken'ichi Matsuyama (Death Note movies' L, Detroit Metal City's Sōichi/Krauser II) stars in the title role of a rogue ninja on the run from his own clan. Kankurō Kudō (Ping Pong, Ikebukuro West Gate Park) wrote the screenplay. The film is based on the 1965-67 and 1982-87 side stories to the 1964-71 Legend of Kamui manga. Viz released the original manga in English.

The second film, at 8.15 p.m., will be Takashi Miike's For Love's Sake, a 2012 adaptation of Ikki Kajiwara's Ai to Makoto romance manga. In the film, Emi Takei (live-action Rurouni Kenshin) plays an angelic high school girl named Ai Saotome, and Satoshi Tsumabuki (live-action Dororo, Dragon Head, Ikebukuro West Gate Park) plays the "ultra" high school delinquent Makoto Taiga. Kajiwara (Ashita no Joe, Kyojin no Hoshi, Tiger Mask) wrote the original manga with illustrations by Takumi Nagayasu (Mibu Gishiden, The Legend of Mother Sarah) for Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1973 to 1976.
