Hakuryū Legend Manga's Nuclear Power-Themed Arc Resumes

Arc suspended in 2011 after the March 11 quake damaged real nuclear reactor

This week's issue of Nihonbungeisha's Weekly Manga Goraku will resume the Genshiryoku Mafia (Nuclear Power Mafia) story arc of Dai Tennōji and artist Michio Watanabe's Hakuryū Legend yakuza manga on Friday. The story focuses on the "dark side of the nuclear power industry." In particular, the characters deal with the danger of a "Chernobyl-level nuclear accident" at facilities run by "Tōto Denryoku."

Nihonbungeisha suspended the arc after the March 11 earthquake (Tōhoku Chihō Taiheiyō-oki Jishin) in 2011. The real-life Tokyo Denryoku (Tokyo Electric Power Company or TEPCO) runs the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and attempted to prevent the reactor fuel rods from melting after the cooling systems were damaged on March 11. Fukushima Daiichi's containment system was designed to prevent a nuclear accident from reaching the proportions of the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl plant in the former Soviet Union.
