The Grudge Reboot Won't Remake Previous Films

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Scriptwriter Jeff Buhler (Midnight Meat Train) told entertainment news website FearNet that The Grudge film reboot will not be a remake of Takashi Shimizu's 2004 American film with actress Sarah Michelle Gellar or Shimizu's own 2002 Japanese film, Juon: The Grudge.

"This is pushing the mythology forward, while keeping the concepts and spirit of those movies, yet finding a new way to tell a story within that world, which is exciting," Buhler said. "New characters, new ghost, and a new mythology."

Buhler is drafting the script with production companies Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe. Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, 30 DAYS of Night, The Grudge) is producing the remake with Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise (The Grudge/Ju-On, Shutter, Dark Water). Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake, and Nathan Kahane are signed on as executive producers.

Still another Grudge film, the Ju-on: Owari no Hajimari (The Grudge: Beginning of the End) horror film, will open in Japanese theaters on June 28.
