Mikio Igarashi's absurd manga about animals already inspired 1995-96 TV anime

Mikio Igarashi's four-panel gag comedy manga Bono Bono is inspiring its first television anime in two decades next spring. The February issue of Takeshobo's Manga Life magazine announced on Thursday that the new anime will premiere on Fuji TV on April 2, 2016. The anime will run every Saturday from 4:52 to 5:00 a.m. Eiken (Sazae-san, Musashi no Ken) is producing the anime.

The manga depicts the absurd gag humor of BONO BONO the otter, Shimarisu the chipmunk, Araiguma the raccoon, and other animals. The tagline in the image above reads, "What shall we play today?"

Igarashi serialized the original manga in Manga Life, Manga Club and other Takeshobo magazines from 1986 onward, and the series' first 40 volumes have 9 million copies in print. The first television anime of the manga ran from April 1995 to March 1996, and the upcoming second television anime will celebrate the manga's 30th anniversary.
