Umimachi Diary/Our Little Sister Film Nominated for 12 Japan Academy Prize Awards

The Japan Academy Prize Association for excellence in film announced the nominees for the 39th annual awards on Monday. Hirokazu Kore-eda's Our Little Sister film, which is based on Akimi Yoshida's Umimachi Diary manga, garnered 12 nominations, the most of any work.
The film garnered nominations for:
- Picture of the Year
- Director of the Year (Hirokazu Kore-eda),
- Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Haruka Ayase),
- Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Kaho and Masami Nagasawa),
- Screenplay of the Year (Hirokazu Kore-eda)
- Newcomer of the Year (Suzu Hirose)
- Outstanding Achievement in Music (Yoko Kanno)
- Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography (Mikiya Takimoto)
- Outstanding Achievement in Lighting Direction (Norikiya Fujii)
- Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction (Keiko Mitsumatsu)
- Outstanding Achievement in Sound Recording (Nobuhiko Matsukage)
- Outstanding Achievement in Film Editing (Hirokazu Kore-eda)
The live-action Bakuman. film also garnered six nominations, including: Director of the Year (Hitoshi Ōne), Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Shōta Sometani), Outstanding Achievement in Music (Sakanaction), Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction (Yūji Tsuzuki), Outstanding Achievement in Sound Recording (Shinji Watanabe), and Outstanding Achievement in Film Editing (Yasuyuki Ōzeki).
Additionally, the following actors and actresses received Newcomer of the Year nominations:
- Tao Tsuchiya (live-action Orange film)
- Kento Yamazaki (live-action Orange, live-action Heroine Shikkaku/No Longer Heroine films)
- Ryōsuke Yamada (live-action Ansatsu Kyōshitsu/Assassination Classroom film)
- Yōjirō Noda (live-action Toilet no Pieta/Pieta in the Toilet film)
The nominees in the Outstanding Foreign Language Film category are American Sniper, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Whiplash, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Spectre.
Actor Tatsuya Nakadai (The Tale of Princess Kaguya, Giovanni's Island) will receive the Special Award of Honor from the Association.
The Nippon Academy-Sho Association, a Japanese group roughly comparable to America's Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Oscars fame, presents the Japan Academy Prizes every year. The nominees all receive "Awards of Excellence," but the actual top award in each category will be presented in a ceremony on March 4 at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo.
Movies are eligible if they opened in Japan between December 14, 2014, and December 15, 2015.
