One Piece Film Gold Gets Biggest Opening For Japanese Films

posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Film opens on July 23 on 743 screens with 2D, 3D, 4DX, MX4D screenings

The staff of the One Piece Film Gold anime movie announced on Saturday that the film will open in Japan on 743 screens, which is the largest for any Japanese film. Previously Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection 'F' held that record for opening on 653 screens in April 2015.

This year's 24th issue of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine had announced on May 16 that the film would be getting screenings in 3D, 4DX, and MX4D in addition to regular 2D screenings. With the 4DX or MX4D systems, certain theaters have motion seats that move in sync with certain action sequences onscreen. Similarly, effects such as scents and wind will operate in accordance with the action onscreen.

The film's official website additionally announced on Friday that in commemoration of the new film, 11 of the previous One Piece films will stream online in Japan on FOD (Fuji TV On Demand), dTV, GEO Channel, GYAO!, and Hulu starting on June 1 (One Piece Film Z's streaming will start on July 1). The stream times and fees differ by service. The site notes that these services are streaming "all of the previous 11 films," but doesn't count the 30-minute One Piece 3D: Mugiwara Chase film that came out in 2011.

Theaters in Japan will distribute five million copies of a "volume 777" book to One Piece Film Gold filmgoers, and the first two million filmgoers will get an as-yet unrevealed rare bonus item. The film will also screen with Chinese and English subtitles in six theaters across Japan from July 23 (the day the film opens nationwide) to August 5.

A One Piece: Heart of Gold two-hour television special will air on July 16 and its story will tie in to One Piece Film Gold.
