Shin Godzilla tops 3.8 billion yen

The live-action film of Kazune Kawahara's Aozora Yell (Yell for the Blue Sky) manga opened in on 281 screens in Japan on Saturday and sold 160,000 tickets to earn 197,000,000 yen (US$1.96 million). The film placed #3 on Japan's weekend box office ranking in terms of tickets sold, but the new Ghostbusters film, which opened in Japan on Friday, outranked Aozora Yell in box office takings for the weekend even though it ranked #4 on tickets sold.

Aozora Yell's first weekend box office takings were a 142.8% increase on the box office takings of the live-action My Love Story!! (Ore Monogatari!!) film. Kawahara also wrote the story for My Love Story!!, with illustrations by Aruko.

In addition, Kizumonogatari II: Nekketsu-hen, the second of three films based on NisOisin's Kizumonogatari novel, opened on 117 screens in Japan on Friday and ranked #8 in the box office.

The new Shin Godzilla (Godzilla: Resurgence) stayed at #2 in its fourth week in theaters. Within 20 days of its July 29 opening, the film has sold 2,850,000 tickets for more than 3.8 billion yen (about US$38 million). The film already surpassed the Japanese box office gross of Legendary Pictures' 2014 Godzilla film, and is projected to earn upwards of 5 billion yen (about US$49.78 million).

The One Piece Film Gold ranked #7 on the chart in its fifth weekend and Gekijōban Kamen Rider Ghost 100 Icon to Ghost Unmei no Toki ranked #10 in its third weekend.
