Kingsglaive FFXV, Miss Hokusai, The Red Turtle, your name. Submitted for Oscars

Japanese-themed Kubo and the Two Strings film also submitted among record 27 films

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Friday that a record 27 films have been submitted for consideration in the Animated Feature Film category for the 89th Academy Awards to be held on February 26, 2017. Takeshi Nozue's Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV CG-animated film; Keiichi Hara's Miss Hokusai; Michael Dudok de Wit, Studio Ghibli, and Wild Bunch's The Red Turtle; and Makoto Shinkai's your name. were all submitted for the award. A maximum of five films from the list will receive the nomination.

The Academy will announce the final nominations on January 24, 2017.

Last year, 16 films were submitted for nomination including When Marnie Was There, The Boy and The Beast, and The Laws of the Universe Part 0, but only When Marnie Was There was nominated. Inside Out eventually won the award.
