Kamen Rider Ex-Aid Gets 4-Part Taiga Prequel Series

posted on by Jennifer Sherman
Kamen Rider Snipe: Episode Zero spinoff debuts in BD set on April 12

The official Twitter account for the Kamen Rider Ex-Aid television series revealed on Saturday that the series is receiving a spinoff prequel titled Kamen Rider Snipe: Episode Zero. The four-part series will focus on the character Taiga Hanaya, Kamen Rider Snipe, and reveal his origins.

Ukyo Matsumoto plays Taiga in Kamen Rider Ex-Aid. The spinoff will reveal how the "genius radiologist" lost his license and became the series' first Kamen Rider.

The prequel series will ship as part of the Kamen Rider Ex-Aid Blu-ray Disc releases. The first volume of the Blu-ray Collection will ship in Japan on April 12 with the first 12 episodes of Kamen Rider Ex-Aid and the first part of Kamen Rider Snipe: Episode Zero. The first set will cost 19,800 yen (about US$176), and the first copies will bundle an eight-page "liner note" and special box to hold all four volumes of the Blu-ray Disc release. The Blu-ray Disc releases are slated to ship every three months.

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, the latest installment in the long-running Kamen Rider special effects series, premiered in Japan on October 2. The show's theme is "doctors x gamers." The protagonist Emu Hōjō's key items include a "Gamer Driver" belt, and a transformation item called a "Rider Gashatt." After transforming, the Emu begins at level one and helps people who have been infected by the game virus "Bugster." Then, the Emu levels up to level two to fight the materialized Bugster.

The Kamen Rider Heisei Generations: Dr. Pac-Man vs. Ex-Aid & Ghost with Legend Rider crossover film opened in Japan on December 10. As with other movies in the Kamen Rider film series, the new film's plot crosses over the current Kamen Rider series with the previous one. In the film, a game virus lifeform called "Pac-Man" invades, and humanity faces an unprecedented crisis. Kamen Rider Ex-Aid must search for the source of the virus. The film will feature Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, Kamen Rider Ghost, Kamen Rider Drive, Kamen Rider Gaim, and Kamen Rider Wizard teaming up.

Kamen Rider Ghost, the previous installment in the franchise, premiered in October 2015.
