Kannagi Creator to Launch New Manga This Winter

The 12th and final compiled book volume of Eri Takenashi's Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens manga (seen right) is revealing on Thursday that Takenashi will begin serializing a new manga in Monthly Comic Rex magazine this winter. The October issue of Ichijinsha's Monthly Comic Rex magazine will reveal details about the new manga on August 27.

Monthly Comic Rex is also publishing the final chapter of the Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens manga on Thursday. The magazine previously revealed in March that the manga had only three chapters left. It did not run in the June issue in April, so the final three chapters ran in the July, August, and September issues. A limited edition of the manga's 12th volume comes with a drama CD with the cast of the television anime adaptation of the manga returning to voice their characters. The CD also contains a new song titled "Saigo no Love Letter" (The Last Love Letter) by Haruka Tomatsu.

The manga will have an art exhibition commemorating the manga's conclusion at Tokyo's GoFa art gallery in Shibuya from Saturday, July 29 to September 3. The exhibition will show new illustrations made for the event, as well as some of the original manuscripts and color illustrations for the manga.

The manga's story centers around Nagi-sama, a goddess who comes to life before an art student when he carves a statue from a Kannagi tree. Takenashi began the manga in Comic Rex in December 2005, though the manga was on hiatus from 2009 to 2011 while Takenashi recovered from an illness. Ichijinsha published the 11th compiled volume last July.

The manga inspired an anime adaptation in 2008. Bandai Entertainment released both the beginning of the Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens manga and its anime adaptation in North America.

Shinichi Yuhki, a manga creator who happens to be Takanashi's brother, launched a Kannagi spinoff manga titled Kanpachi - Crazy Seriola Dumerili in Comic Rex in 2010, and the series ended in March 2016.
