Director Tabata: game won't get full sequel

Square Enix announced on Thursday that its Final Fantasy XV game is getting a free crossover DLC event with Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed franchise. The "Assassin's Festival" event launches on August 31 and runs through January 31, 2018.

Additionally, in an interview with gaming website Polygon on Wednesday, game director Hajime Tabata stated that Square Enix will not develop a full sequel to the game, and will instead focus on shorter story-based installments, such as the "Episode" releases that have so far focused on the members of Noctis' party.

Tabata also said that he is trying to add more story content to a later part of the game.

Square Enix is developing a Windows PC version of Final Fantasy XV, as well as a smartphone and PC game titled Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition. Tabata previously teased content for the Nintendo Switch earlier during the Gamescom 2017 event this week.

Square Enix released the "Episode Prompto" story DLC for the game on June 27. The new story episode is the second in a series of story episodes focusing on each of the main characters of Final Fantasy XV. An episode focused on Ignis is slated for December. Square Enix released the "Episode Gladiolus" story episode on March 28. An upcoming "Comrades" expansion will add multiplayer to the game. Additionally, an update for the game later this month will include a bestiary and a chapter select option.

Final Fantasy XV went on sale worldwide for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One last November.

The game's director Hajime Tabata stated that the game broke even with development costs on "day one." As of January 10, the game had sold more than 6 million copies worldwide. The number includes physical shipments and download sales.
