Shunsaku Hayashi's 'Railment' Short Qualifies for Oscar Consideration

Award-winning 9-minute film has screened in film festivals around the world

Cartoon news site Cartoon Brew revealed in its list of animated short films eligible for the 90th Academy Awards in 2018 that Shunsaku Hayashi's "Railment" short is qualified for Oscar nomination. While the short is qualified, it is not known if Hayashi entered the short film for consideration.

Hayashi describes the film:

In a continuous scenery, his physical movement stays in the same position. The speed of the continuity and his movement have accelerated and gradually cause a distortion.

The nine-minute film has screened in film festivals around the world, and has won the Chris Frayne Award: Best Animated Fiilm at the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Jury Award for Best Narrative Short at Nonplussed Fest, the "Lenz" for Best Animated Film for the Festival of Nations, and an Honourable Mention at Porto7.

Cartoon Brew noted its list may not be exhaustive, and the Academy will give its members an official list of eligible films at a later date. Academy members in the Short Films and Feature Animation branch will then vote on eligible films in October-November. Then the Academy will announce a shortlist of 10 films, from which members will vote again to determine the final five nominees.

No anime works were shortlisted for the Animated Short Film category in the 89th Academy Awards, which was the third year in a row that no anime have been shortlisted in the top 10.
