In This Corner Of The World, Napping Princess Nominated for Annie Awards

Mary and The Witch's Flower, Pig: The Dam Keeper, Lost in Oz also honored

The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announced the nominees for its 45th Annual Annie Awards on Monday. Sunao Katabuchi's In This Corner of the World and Kenji Kamiyama's Napping Princess both received nominations in the Best Animated Feature-Independent category. The other nominees are Loving Vincent, The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales, and The Breadwinner.

Studio Ponoc's Mary and The Witch's Flower also received nominations in the "Outstanding Achievement for Production Design in an Animated Feature Production" and "Outstanding Achievement for Writing in an Animated Feature Production" categories. The production designers up for the award include Tomotaka Kubo, Tomoya Imai, and Satoko Nakamura. The original scriptwriters Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Riko Sakaguchi as well as the adapted script writers David Freedman and Lynda Freedman are listed for the writing award.

Pig: The Dam Keeper Poems, a series of shorts produced for Hulu Japan by American studio Tonko House, received a nomination in the "Best Animated Special Production" category.

The "The Pearl of Pingaree" episode from Amazon's Lost In Oz television series received a nomination in the "Best Animated Television/Broadcast Production For Children" category. The series features animation from Japan's Polygon Pictures.

The Samurai Jack animated series received nominations for "Best General Audience Animated Television/Broadcast Production," character design, production design, and editorial.

The nominees in the main Best Animated Feature category are Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, Cars 3, Coco, Despicable Me 3, and The Boss Baby.

ASIFA-Hollywood added the Best Animated Feature-Independent award for the 2016 awards in order to "recognize not only features in wide release, but also the independent animators, international studios, anime and special productions that might not otherwise get the attention they deserve." Production I.G's Miss Hokusai, Michael Dudok de Wit and Studio Ghibli's The Red Turtle, and Makoto Shinkai's your name. were all nominated in the category last year, and The Red Turtle won the award.

The Annie Awards recognize outstanding achievement in animation. The awards ceremony will be held on February 3, 2018.
