Detective Conan, Doraemon, Gintama top list of domestic films in Japan

Japanese film news website Cinema Today listed the top 10 highest-grossing domestic and foreign films in Japan in 2017 on Sunday.

The domestic Japanese list consists of six anime, and one live-action film based on existing manga.

Top 10 Highest-Grossing Domestic Films in Japan in 2017

  1. Detective Conan: The Crimson Love Letter (6.89 billion yen, about US$61.1 million)
  2. Eiga Doraemon: Nobita no Nankyoku Kachi Kochi Daibōken (4.43 billion yen, about US$39.3 million)
  3. Gintama (3.90 billion yen, about US$34.6 million)
  4. Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! (3.55 billion yen, about US$31.5 million)
  5. Kimi no Suizō o Tabetai (3.52 billion yen, about US$31.2 million)
  6. Mary and The Witch's Flower (3.29 billion yen, about US$29.2 million)
  7. Eiga Yo-kai Watch: Sora Tobu Kujira to Double Sekai no Daibōken da Nyan! (opened on December 17, 2016; 3.26 billion yen, about US$28.9 million)
  8. Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale (2.52 billion yen, about US$22.3 million)
  9. Shinobi no Kuni (2.51 billion yen, about US$22.2 million)
  10. Sekigahara (tied for 10th, 2.40 billion yen, about US$21.3 million)
  11. 22-nenme no Kokuhaku: Watashi ga Satsujinhan Desu (tied for 10th, 2.40 billion yen, about US$21.3 million)

Last year, your name. topped the list with 21.32 billion yen (about US$182.2 million), and Shin Godzilla ranked at #2 with 8.11 billion yen (US$69.30 million). Both earned more than the top-grossing film this year. Last year's Detective Conan film, Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare, earned 6.33 billion yen (about US$54.09 million).

  3. Despicable Me 3 (tied for 2nd; 7.3 billion yen, about US$64.7 million)
  4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (6.7 billion yen, about US$59.4 million)
  5. Moana (opened in Japan on March 10; 5.16 billion yen, about US$45.8 million)
  6. Sing (opened in Japan on March 17; 5.11 billion yen, about US$45.3 million)
  7. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (opened on December 16, 2016; 4.63 billion yen, about US$41.1 million)
  8. La La Land (opened in Japan on February 24; 4.40 billion yen, about US$39.0 million)
  9. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (opened in Japan on January 27; 4.27 billion yen, about US$37.9)
  10. The Fate of the Furious (4.05 billion yen, about US$35.9)

Last year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens topped the list with 11.63 billion yen (about US$99.38 million).
