Famitsu: Switch console sells 2.016 million units in Japan

Kadokawa subsidiary Gzbrain Inc. and Kadokawa's Famitsu gaming magazine reported on Wednesday that Nintendo's Splatoon 2 game has sold an estimated 2,016,182 copies in Japan as of February 11. The game is now the best-selling Nintendo Switch game in Japan so far, and it is the console's first game to surpass 2 million copies sold in Japan.

The announcement press release also stated that the Nintendo Switch has sold an estimated 3,766,244 units in Japan as of February 11. The Switch has sold 14.86 million units worldwide as of December 31, surpassing the Wii U's lifetime worldwide sales of 13.56 million units.

Splatoon 2 shipped on July 21, and it sold an estimated 1,013,842 copies in Japan as of August 20.

The game uses both the Joy-Con and Pro controllers, and can be played in both TV Mode and Handheld Mode. Players can play matches against opponents online, or via local multiplayer. Similarly to the original Splatoon game, Nintendo will continue to update Splatoon 2 with new stages and weapons after the game launches. Nintendo is also planning in-game events.

Nintendo released the first Splatoon game for the Wii U in May 2015. The game centers on "Inklings," who are beings who can transform between human and squid form. The game pits players in a fight for territory as two teams fight to cover their battlefield with their respective paint colors.

Viz Media licensed Sankichi Hinodeya's manga adaptation of the first game and shipped the first volume on December 12. The second volume will ship on March 13.
