Maria the Virgin Witch Manga Gets Special Chapter in November

posted on by Karen Ressler
Chapter centers on Artemis, Priapus

This year's November issue of Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine announced on Saturday that Masayuki Ishikawa is drawing a new one-shot for his Maria the Virgin Witch (Junketsu no Maria) manga in the next issue on November 7. The chapter celebrates the manga's 10th anniversary.

The magazine advertises that one-shot is titled "Junketsu no Maria #Bernard Gilbert," centering on the anime-original monk characters Bernard and Gilbert. However, Ishikawa explained on Twitter that the ad is incorrect; the chapter that will appear on November 7 will be "#Artemis Priapus," about Maria's familiars, and the monks will not appear.

Ishikawa (Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture ) launched the original Maria the Virgin Witch manga in the inaugural issue of Kodansha's Good! Afternoon magazine in 2008 and ended it in 2013. Ishikawa then drew the single-volume Maria the Virgin Witch Exhibition manga in 2014. Kodansha Comics published the original manga's three volumes and the single-volume Maria the Virgin Witch Exhibition in English.

The story follows Maria, the most powerful witch who lives during the Hundred Years' War in France. She despises war, so she obstructs battles with her strong magical powers. Her meddling with her succubus Artemis and incubus Priapos has caught the attention of the heavens, and so the Archangel Michael issues an edict. When Maria loses her virginity, she will also lose her magical powers. A beautiful angel named Ezekiel is supposed to watch Maria and make sure the witch does not use magic in front of people, but Maria continues to use magic anyways.

A television anime of the original manga premiered in January 2015. FUNimation Entertainment released the anime in North America.
