Bakumatsu Anime Gets 2nd Season in 2019

posted on by Karen Ressler
1st 12-episode season ran from October-December

The official Twitter account for Bakumatsu, the television anime of its Renai Bakumatsu Kareshi smartphone game, announced on Friday that a second season has been greenlit for 2019.

The anime premiered in Japan on October 4, and the 12th and final episode of the first season debuted on Thursday night. Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs.

In the original game's story, the heroine is in Kyoto for sightseeing when she receives a mysterious pocket watch from a man. The heroine wears the watch and passes through a shrine's torii gate, and she is transported to "another" Bakumatsu era 150 years ago during the final years of the Edo period. The heroine must then try to find a way back home to the present.

While the original app focuses on romance, the anime is a sci-fi action-adventure series.

Masaki Watanabe (KADO - The Right Answer, Bartender) directed the series at Studio DEEN. Masahiro Yokotani (All Out!!, Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club franchise) handled the series composition, and Hidekazu Shimamura (Clockwork Planet, Nodame Cantabile) designed the characters based on Natsuki's original designs. MAGEScomposed the music. MIKOTO performed the opening song "Spiral Maze" while Eri Sasaki performed the ending song "Haruka Naru Tabi."

The romance simulation game originally launched on iOS and Android on March 14, 2017.
