Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns TV Anime Special Gets Manga Adaptation

Sequel to Pokémon: The First Movie originally aired in 2000

Shogakukan announced on Friday that the Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns (Pocket Monster: Myuutsu! Ware wa Koko ni Ari) television anime special (pictured at right) will get a manga adaptation that will debut in the August issue of its Bessatsu Coro Coro Comics Special magazine on June 28. Machito Gomi, who is also drawing a manga adaptation of the upcoming Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution film in the main Coro Coro Comics magazine, is drawing the manga.

The one-hour special originally aired in December 2000. In the story, Team Rocket leader Giovanni has found Mewtwo in a remote area of the Johto region. As Giovanni tries to re-capture Mewtwo, Ash and his friends are kidnapped by Domino, a new Team Rocket member, while trying to rescue Pikachu from Jessie and James. The Clone Pokémon are also captured and are then used as bait for Mewtwo. The situation then becomes a battle between the wills of Mewtwo and Giovanni; and Mewtwo also tries to discover if it and the clones have a purpose in life, even though they are products of science.

Warner Bros. released the special on DVD in 2001.

The special takes place after Pokémon: The First Movie, which opened in Japan in July 1998. Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution (Mewtwo no Gyakushū Evolution), the 22nd film in the Pokémon franchise, is a 3D CG remake of the film, and it will open in Japan on July 12.
