The Fable Film Opens at #2, Ride Your Wave at #9 in Japan

The live-action film of Katsuhisa Minami's The Fable manga sold 228,525 tickets and earned 310,105,600 yen (about US$2.90 million) from Saturday to Sunday to rank #2 in its opening weekend. It actually opened on Friday, and sold 296,492 tickets for 396,614,500 yen (about US3.711 million) in its first three days. The Eiga.com website reports that the film is projected to earn over 2.5 billion yen (about US23.3 million) by the end of its run.

The film opened in Japan on June 21. Kan Eguchi directed the film and Yūsuke Watanabe wrote the script.

Legendary Pictures' Godzilla sequel film Godzilla: King of the Monsters film dropped from #3 to #5 in its fourth weekend. It earned 121,389,100 yen (about US$1.13 million) from Friday to Sunday, and sold a cumulative total of 1.59 million tickets for 2,463,096,400 yen (about US$22.95 million) so far. The film opened in 431 theaters on May 31, and sold 479,000 tickets and earned 677 million yen (about US$6.27 million) in its opening weekend.

The film earned an estimated US$49 million in the United State, and a total of US$179 million during its opening weekend worldwide.

Uta no Prince Sama Maji Love Kingdom, the anime film in the Uta no Prince Sama franchise, dropped from #6 to #7 in its second weekend. The film earned 77,249,700 yen (about US$719,800) from Friday to Sunday, and has earned a cumulative total of 378,833,300 yen (about US$3.52 million).

The film sold more than 100,000 tickets and earned 222.7 million yen (about US$2.05 million) in its opening weekend. The film opened in Japan on June 14. Sentai Filmworks licensed the film, and the film will have a premiere screening on July 5 at this year's Anime Expo event. Voice actors Takuma Terashima (Otoya Ittoki) and Mamoru Miyano (Tokiya Ichinose) will be in attendance. Sentai Filmworks will also screen the film in U.S. theaters at a later date.

The second film in the six-part Girls und Panzer das Finale film series dropped from #4 to #8 in its second weekend. The film earned 62,284,660 yen (about US$580,300) from Friday to Sunday, and has earned a cumulative total of 288,073,620 yen (about US$2.68 million).

The film sold 118,000 tickets to earn 145 million yen (about US$1.33 million) and rank #4 in its opening weekend. The opening weekend amount is .9% higher than the first film in the Girls und Panzer das Finale series.

Masaaki Yuasa and Science SARU's Ride Your Wave (Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara) anime film ranked at #9 in its opening weekend.

The film opened in Japan on June 21. It won the Best Animation Film award at the Shanghai International Film Festival's Golden Goblet Awards. Reiko Yoshida (Lu over the wall, A Silent Voice, Liz and the Blue Bird) wrote the film's script, and Michiru Oshima (Patema Inverted, The Night is Short Walk On, Girl) composed the music. GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE performed the theme song "Brand New Story."

Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl (Seishun Buta Yarō wa Yume-Miru Shōjo no Yume wo Minai), the anime film based on Hajime Kamoshida's Seishun Buta Yarō light novel series, dropped from #7 to #10 in its second weekend. The film earned 64,375,800 yen (about US$599,800) from Friday to Sunday, and has earned a cumulative total of 231,828,740 yen (about US$2.16 million).

The film debuted at #7 in its opening weekend. The film opened in Japan on June 15, and it sold 66,000 tickets for 100 million yen (about US$900,000) in its first two days. Aniplex of America will host the United States premiere of the film at Anime Expo on July 7.

The film features a returning staff and cast, including director Sōichi Masui, scriptwriter Masahiro Yokotani, character designer Satomi Tamura, musical composer fox capture plan, and animation production studio CloverWorks.

The live-action Final Fantasy XIV Dad of Light (Final Fantasy XIV: Hikari no Ōtōsan) film remake opened at #12.

Studio Trigger and XFlag's original anime film Promare is out of the top 10, but still earned 55,286,100 yen (about US$515,100), for a cumulative total of 622,597,200 yen (about US$5.80 million).

Studio 4°C's anime film of Daisuke Igarashi's Children of the Sea (Kaijū no Kodomo) manga dropped off the top 10 in its third weekend, but it still earned 32,640,900 yen (about US$304,100) from Friday to Sunday. It has now earned a cumulative total of 316,860,800 yen (about US$2.95 million).

The Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya: Prisma Phantasm original video anime dropped from #1 to #2 in the mini-theater rankings in its second weekend. The OVA premiered in Japanese theaters on June 14, and will ship on Blu-ray Disc and DVD at a later date.

The anime film of Kentetsu Takamori's Buddhist book Tannishō o Hiraku (Opening the Tannishō) dropped from #2 to #5 in the mini-theater ranking in its fifth weekend.
