The Ottawa International Animation Festival (OIAF) revealed on Wednesday that ON-GAKU: Our Sound, the anime film adaptation of Hiroyuki Ohashi's "ON-GAKU" manga, will screen in competition for the festival's Grand Prize for Features award. The OIAF will take place from September 25 to 29 in Ottawa.

Masaaki Yuasa's The Night is Short Walk On, Girl film won the festival's Grand Prize for Features award in 2017. The festival also screened Yuasa's Kick-Heart short in competition in 2013.

ON-GAKU: Our Sound will open in Japan in January 2020.

Ohashi announced the film project in 2012 and launched a crowdfunding campaign for the film on the Makuake website in July 2018. The campaign sought to raise 3.5 million yen (about US$31,000) to finish and edit the film by this year. The campaign ended in September after raising 4,129,000 yen (about US$38,166).

Kenji Iwaisawa, known for the "Fukurai-cho, Tunnel Roji no Otoko" and "Big Boss" animated shorts, is directing the film. Ohashi is responsible for the work's character designs and overall supervision. Rock 'n' Roll Mountain will distribute the film, with distribution cooperation by Arc Films.

Ohashi originally self-published "ON-GAKU" in 2005, and it tells the story of young delinquents who decide to start a rock band despite never having touched instruments before. Ohta Publishing printed the manga in its 2009 ON-GAKU to Manga collection of Ohashi's work.

Ohashi's manga short story series City Lights inspired a live-action film adaptation titled Chōnōryoku Kenkyū-bu no 3-nin (ESP Research Club's 3 Members) in December 2014.
