Godzilla: King of Monsters nominated for sound

The Hollywood Professional Association revealed its list of nominees for this year's HPA Awards on October 1, revealing that both Warner Bros.' Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Twentieth Century Fox's Alita: Battle Angel films are nominees for the Outstanding Visual Effects category for feature films. Godzilla: King of Monsters is also nominated for the Outstanding Sound category for feature films.

The association will announce the winners at a ceremony in Los Angeles on November 21.

Rob Letterman's Pokémon Detective Pikachu opened in Japan on May 3 at #3, and in the United States on May 10.

The film stars Justice Smith as main character Tim Goodman and Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu. Letterman directed the film, with a script by Nicole Perlman and Letterman. A sequel has reportedly already been greenlit.

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez's live-action film of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) manga opened in early February in the U.K. and in several countries in Asia before its U.S. debut on February 14. The film then opened in Japan on February 22 and ranked at #2 at the box office there.

The movie stars Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, The Divergent Series: Insurgent, Man Seeking Woman) in motion capture as Alita. Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City, Spy Kids) directed the film. James Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau produced the project, and Shutter Island's Laeta Kalogridis penned a script.

Legendary Pictures' Godzilla sequel film Godzilla: King of the Monsters opened in the United States and Japan on May 31. The film opened at #1 at the box office in Japan.

Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, The Conjuring, Bates Motel), and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) starred together in the film as a father, mother, and daughter. Michael Dougherty (Krampus) directed the sequel, after co-writing the script with his Krampus writing partner Zach Shields.

Update: Godzilla: King of Monsters film's information added.
