Looking back at the OVAs, the new LotGH is is probably the worst glow-up from the original I’ve seen. They’re just pandering to stupid fangirls with those terrible redesigns and honestly, it’s a disgrace.

I've seen these popping up at Twitter for a long time now. More than anything, I'm kind of happy that Reuenthal's "黙れ下衆!" ("Shut up, you wretched bastard") has been included. Such an awesome moment, although not a wise one.

Edit: J.F.C. if I see one more person whining about the new show "catering to stupid fangirls"... Either you like the damn story for its characters and content, or just admit that you just want to feel superior for liking the OVA. The characters are supposed to be pretty; the first manga adaptation had pretty character designs before many people whining about the new show now have been even born. And if the OVA came out today you'd never even watch it and claim it's "fujo bait" or whatever.

I don't even like the new designs (I think they're terribly boring at best and downright out of character at worst) and I wasn't blown away by the first episode, but holy shoot, the OVA-worship in the fandom is terrible and makes me want to avoid any discussions whatsoever. I've been a fan of LoGH for longer than I suspect many people in the fandom have been alive, and even if this is not the re-adaptation I would have wanted, I'd been excited to have some new activity in the fandom. But all these reactions are just making me feel disappointed in people.

So far the new show hasn't been a disaster, but I don't think they've earned me preferring them over the older posters. But who knows. I know I didn't care much for the original on its first episode either.

Well, I for one am glad that it's making terrible elitist (and quite possibly sexist) fans like you mad. That alone makes the remake worthwhile in my eyes. Let it completely destroy any gate-keeping as possible new fans invade the clubhouse of a fandom that needs certain pretensions about it destroyed.

LoGH has always pandered to fangirls.

This is like people who think that Gundam pandering to fangirls started with Wing or SEED.

Pretty much this. I bet many of these people didn't know that Captain Tsubasa and Slam Dunk also had lots of fangirls. You already mentioned Gundam and that was huge too.

This might shock some people but shows like Psycho Pass, Gintama, Durarara!, Kekkai Sensen, One Punch Man and the like probably got sequels due to the fujoshi and female otaku buying the Blu-rays and DVDs. The characters in these shows range from very popular to quite popular among females.

Before you think that's a bad thing, remember that for a long time and actually even now in more than a few cases, disc sales matter. Again, things have changed in the last few years but they still do matter even if they didn't as much as before.

This pretty much sums up the marketing campaign of Psycho Pass' first season:
Psycho Pass: "This is a serious show! No moe here! No pandering!"
Psycho Pass: *posts ads with the male cast being shirtless and hot*

I wouldn't say LoGH necessarily pandered to female readers/viewers (Tanaka has a thing for pretty characters; the manga is pretty much Michihara Katsumi being herself; and the OVA targeted existing fans of the novel, its financing and distribution depending on pre-sales) but it never pretended to be "for srs men only", and Tanaka himself was aware of many of his fans being female. It always had lots of female fans, right from the first book. Yes, that kind of female fans as well. Right from the first book. I mean you look at all the rapt descriptions of Reinhard's beauty, or scenes like the one where Reinhard plays with Kircheis' hair ("as was his habit") and say, with a straight face, that the new anime's pretty boy designs are "a disgrace". A disgrace on what, all the Reinhard/Kircheis (Reuenthal/Mittermeier, Schönkopf/Yang...) doujinshi that existed since the novels?

Eh, you guys are making it a lot more difficult and contrived than what it actually is for some of us. No sane person would deny that LOTGH always had pretty boys, therefore I believe fangirls were always a significant part of the audience. However, one is allowed to think these new designs are horrendous & simplistic (boring, sameface-syndrome that makes Reinhard hilariously buff & out of character...just to mention ONE example) without being called an elitist. Sometimes a redesign works, sometimes it ends up looking like Kuroko No Basket in space. It also doesn't help that the OST is more generic with an opening like sounds like someone mixed Gundam Unicorn with Starship's Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now. It really feels like going to Mc Donalds instead of a fancy restaurant.

Mind you, I'm not even talking with nostalgia googles: I started watching the original series two months ago after years of postponing it. Characters barely move and it can be pretentious and melodramatic, but I inmediately realized they messed up the remake.

At the end of the day both original and remake can coexist so anyone can feel what they want and pick according to their preferences.

If you read the first comment you'll see what we're reacting to. If Morgan B. had said what you said we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I don't like the new character designs either, as I already mentioned. Actually I don't like most of the visual choices in the new show because as it is, it's just trying way too hard to rehash the OVA instead of doing something new and interesting. (Which is why I like the new manga.) I don't even like Reinhard's voice, Miyano Mamoru sounds a decade too old, and way too enervated, so far he has none of Reinhard's energy and drive.

But if I'm going to criticize the show I'm going to do it on the show's own merits (or lack thereof), not because it's not like the OVA. So many people in the fandom are ridiculously elitist and purist, except they treat the OVA as if it was the source material. They even believe things about it which are just not true ("it looks realistic because it understands its seriousness!" "the classical music BGM is a proof of its maturity!" etc.) and dismiss anything that is different as heresy and "disgrace".

And in any case, this is just the first episode and there's still 11 to go. How about not dismissing it right away simply because it's not like the LoGH you imprinted on.

I love the entire LotGH franchise, thus I don't want to rush on criticizing this remake. With only 12 episodes for a season and movies for its sequel, I've already set my lowest of expectations. Still, I hope this adaptation won't be too much focused on sales and just go for a sensible and solid standalone version.

Gotta love another opportunity to see a modernized epic clash of geniuses, Wang and Reinhard. While I'm not sold in Miyano being Reinhard and Horikawa still is far better than him. I'm very glad Suzumura got Wang.
