The film was first recorded with an English language track aimed toward American audiences and had a American release in 1982. The film was later recorded with a Japanese language track for the Japanese release in 1986.
Unlike the famous 1939 American film adaptation starring Judy Garland, all four witches from the children's novel by L. Frank Baum are present and Glinda is correctly identified as the Good Witch of the South.
Dorothy enjoys eating a pie that closely resembles a Boston cream pie, which is actually a cake.
Originally planned for a theatrical release, the movie would eventually end up being released in Japan straight to video and on satellite television (CS) from July 1 1982. However, it was shown in cinemas in some countries, such as Spain, Czechoslovakia and Latin America
