The Kizumonogatari III: Reiketsu-hen anime film earned 86,718,100 yen (about US$746,000) on Saturday and Sunday to rank #9 at the Japanese box office for the weekend (excluding Friday). The film opened in Japan on Friday.

The second film, Kizumonogatari II: Nekketsu-hen, opened in Japan on August 19 and sold 148,200 tickets in its first three days to earn 196,051,200 yen (about US$1.95 million). The film opened on 117 screens and ranked #8 at the Japanese box office for that Saturday and Sunday.

The first film in the trilogy, Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu, premiered in Japan on January 8, 2016. Aniplex of America began screening the first film in the United States in February, and it debuted the second film in October. Aniplex of America released the first film on Blu-ray Disc on December 27.

Tatsuya Oishi, who directed the Bakemonogatari anime series, directed the film trilogy at the anime studio SHAFT. Akiyuki Simbo is credited as chief director. Akio Watanabe and Hideyuki Morioka designed the characters. Yota Tsuruoka directed the sound, and Satoru Kousaki composed the music.

Kizumonogatari is the third volume in NisiOisin's Monogatari book series and is a prequel to Bakemonogatari. The novel tells the story of how protagonist Koyomi encounters the female vampire that would turn him and his journey to return to his normal life. Vertical licensed the novel, and released it in December 2015.
